Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is officially here! From October 15 through December 7, you have the opportunity to make important decisions about your healthcare coverage.
With so many options available, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, and that’s when mistakes happen. Unfortunately, even small missteps can have a big impact on your healthcare and out-of-pocket costs in the year ahead.
Here are the top five mistakes we see people make during Medicare enrollment and how to avoid them:
- Ignoring Plan Changes. Just because your plan worked last year doesn’t mean that it will be the same this year. Carriers often update their benefits, costs, and networks. Ignoring your plan’s Annual Notice of Change could mean being surprised by higher costs or fewer benefits in January. Tip: Always review the changes carefully, even if you are happy with your current plan.
- Overlooking Prescription Coverage. Drug plans are especially prone to changes. A medication you take may no longer be covered, or it may be moved to a more expensive tier. Tip: Make a list of your prescriptions and review them with your advisor to ensure they’re still covered affordably.
- Choosing Based on Price Alone. It’s tempting to pick the plan with the lowest monthly premium. But that doesn’t always mean it’s the best value. A plan with low premiums but high out-of-pocket costs could end up costing you more in the long run. Tip: Look at the full picture – premiums, copays, deductibles, coverage, etc.
- Missing the Deadline. AEP ends on December 7, and once the deadline passes, you may be locked into your plan until next year. Waiting until the last minute can limit your ability to make thoughtful choices. Tip: Don’t delay – schedule your review early to avoid the year-end rush.
- Not Seeking Help. Medicare can be confusing, and trying to navigate the options on your own can feel overwhelming. The good news? You don’t have to go it alone.
